Review Foot caster (clone)

Bought 4 of these a while back to level the M300. did as they should, happy days...

However last week I decided to check the bed on the lathe as something was amiss with machining. Annnnnd the problem is the castors. The feet are rubber, the weight of the machine has compressed the feet knocking it out of level. Grumble.

They olny just lift the wheels off the ground as well.

So I machined or have started to machine 4 replacement feet from bar. First one done and a lick of Blue to abate the rust.

Rated at 250kg each it should be able to level without the rubber deforming so much. But you get what you pay for I guess

If you just want to move a machine around and then set the feet down to stop it moving, they will do. But in no way are the leveling feet.

I looked at those things a while back.

The rating is non specific. I suspect it's for static load on the feet rather than moving. I looked at the pins through the centers of the castors and compared them to similarly rated units without the feet and it was (visually) clear that the other units were way more significant.

This isn't the same as your issue at all, and, indeed, more or less the opposite, but it made me dubious of them.

I went for some standard dual castors instead.

Depends on the size you have. I have all 3, I bought the biggest first, as I wanted to lift the lathe to save my back, but they were too high, so they are now on the Major ELT. Just bought the smallest set for the Light Vertical. Both weigh less than the lathe and dont need leveling just the feet down to stop it from moving.

Just to close this review. These castors are not capable of levelling a machine and holding the desired level. The rubber feet will compress over time. This will depend on many factors. Never the less they will do form. Rated @250kg per wheel they should coped with the 583kg plus 75kg of tooling etc of the M300.
The adjusters are made of plastic. Spanners slide off them, and the top of this bears upon the pinned top plate.

So I junked the lot, machining new feet, and height adjusters with 40x20x4 thrust bearings. Blued finish. M12 thread welded to the adjustment ring. CSK M5 in the top to stop it falling apart.






I have them fitted to the mills as well, but wont get the same treatment, as the feet are used to just hold the machine in place not level a lathe bed.

Name ground off and rattle can black. Sorted

With the needle roller bearings in a static position, and vibration from the machine being transmitted into them, is there any danger they will brinnell into the thrust washer over time? I wonder if a plain bronze washer would have a longer life than the bearing.
