This bit of the Highway Code that was quoted earlier would seem to sort everyone out who wants to go back to candles in jam-jars . . .Highway Code, exhists to explain the requirements of driving, here is a section on lighting
4. Lighting requirements (113 to 116)
Law RVLR reg 27
115
- slow down, and if necessary stop, if you are dazzled by oncoming headlights
Nah cods wallop. You can only go so fast on roads. Same as 30 years ago Its not a bloody rally course. As said you can see plenty with side lights on the roads now with so much street lighting.
Providing all that light isn't causing oncoming drivers to loose the ability to SEE without squinting or looking away. Sorry but you can have too much of a good thing. Who really needs rally spec lights to drive within the legal limits or do we have to suffer the excess lighting to placate the illegal drivers?Personally I don't think you can have too much light on the road at night. Always a fan of additional spotlights too. Courtesy to oncoming motorists however being paramount.
I use my mains so infrequently I can't actually remember when I last put them on for more than just flashing.
only time I struggle to see is tits with there lights on mains or excessive brightness or elevation.
Only time I really use mine is pitch black country lanes. Why would I need em on a partially lit a road with white lines and cats eyes
My point is that you dont need dips or more to see where your going.I would take someone's licence away for driving on parking lights.

When your in well lite area then you don't need even dips on.. then when in other areas use dips.
It's down to common sense and not being any and use the lights I stead of full wack when not needed.
Who said anything about running on side lights? Not me . My van runs dipped all the time. Like a Volvo I don't need to turn them off when the engines stopped. I don't feel the need to drive around with my main beams glaring away.So that other people can see you more clearly.
It is very easy to miss someone on partially lit roads, early evening, with only sidelights on (unless they are those superbright LED DRLs).
Especially when others have their dipped beams on around you.
In my own humble opinion it is technology that has caused this. Another case of tech advancing faster than laws, but the real problem is tech removing the need for drivers to think.
Allow me to ask, as a straw man type of thing really,
What was wrong with a 2 stage headlamp switch? Off/Side/Head (No Auto)
Why is a manual dip switch not sufficient? Why the need for auto high beam?
If DRL is a good thing, (and I'm not convinced it is) then why not the rears as well? and why not a specified brightness? Some of these would be OK as search lights.
The biggest one I think is the law about the dash having to be lit all the time. Why? This was a fairly decent indicator to the driver that the lights are not on.
These questions could equally be applied to things like wipers. Automatic wipers are just adding complexity which is not required. If the screen is wet you turn on the wipers. Simple really.
The thing is, the more that is automated, the less the driver has to think, despite the fact it is the driver who is legally responsible to maintain proper care and attention to operating the vehicle. Basically the law hasn't kept pace.

Edit.
Only time they're ever turned off is when I'm reversing in daylight and want my warning buzzer to work. Doesn't sound with the lights on by design I assume.
Yes awesome - very similar to the Insignia and Volvo systems. That's a really good implementation, I saw it at Gaydon about a year ago, way better than the current competition IMO.
Agreed. But it’s perfectly legal to drive on side lights only in a built up area with street lights and speed restriction of 30The point is that lights in urban areas are mostly there for others to see YOU. Dipped headlights should come on at the first position of the light switch in my opinion, sidelights are parking lights, not driving lights.
