Go for a Moulton, spend all your ££££, your kids, their kids and their kids kid etc.

It is expensive, custom made and unique to the rider.

Brompton & moulton are good of course, I have a dahon which is also good,mine has full size wheels,stainless steel chain & 8 speed hub gears[like the old sturmey archer] far superior to deraileurs which gather all the crap & wear out,you can also change to any gear whilst stationary, dahon are the largest folding bike manufacturer in the world invented by david hon, & are made in america, there's a fantastic bike shop not far from us in york where mine was bought from & as a bonus you can look round the railway museum john.

I bought two for use by the wife & I, when caravanning. I bought them off the net & they have aluminium frames/6 speed shimano gears manufactured by 8funbike.com (chinese I suspect).
Overall build quality is good, if I had to complain about anything it would be the seat height adjustment. The seat stem is held by an overcentre clamp & needs to be tight to stop stem slipping through it. I have toyed with the idea of drilling the stem at intervals & inserting an R clip to give a more positive stop on the stem slipping through the clamp.
As I said they were bought for use when caravanning & we don't travel far on them (max so far 5 miles) but they perform reasonably well. If I was travelling a long distance I'd get my trusty Cube out of the garage.

I've had several. Don't buy "sight unseen" unless a well known brand such as Brompton, Moulton, Dahon. There are a lot of Chinese now available that look OK but will break, rust, fall apart etc so be wary.

I bought 6 on eBay for £40..
Kept the best one
a 1972 Austrian classic..
,swapping the best bits from others
,sold the others for £19 each..

I bought the Mrs a newer 1990 virtually unused cheapie folder..

Tbh..they have robust 20 wheels..go almost anywhere..
and I wouldn't swop for a £800 Brompton thing..

We take them all over the country in the back of the car usually on city visits
may drive to Italy ,with them next year..

i dont like the small wheeled ones prefer 20inch plus wheels other ones don't feel stable on the rough roads and pot holes

We got a couple of cheap 20" wheel Chinese folders on eBay a few years ago and they have been fine. They are a bit heavy compared to the expensive ones and the brakes needed a tweak but they have done some miles while we were camping and as shopping bike. I prefer the larger wheels as well for canal towpath riding and campsites.

Moultons are great but they're not really folding bikes - you can split them into two halves to put it into the back of a car, but it's not really a practical fold. If that doesn't matter they're great bikes if a bit pricey.

If you want a quality bike that folds quickly into a really compact package then the Brompton is the one to go for.

What does she want to use it for, small rides or longer rides. The small wee fold up bikes aren't great bikes. Considering it takes two seconds to remove front and rear wheels on a full size bike I personally wouldn't bother myself. Whip off the wheels, bungy cord to tie together and sorted.

Yeah, and re-threading the oily chain, she's going to love that.

You don't need to touch the chain to put a rear wheel on, just the rear much so just keep it clean. Full size bike much nicer to ride.
