Also had a very near miss with an X6, pulled out to overtake a slower car pulling a trailer, X6 bloke did a rolling approach to the side road end, looked right, (but not left) and pulled out, I had to do a very hard swerve to avoid a collision, maybe missed him by 12".
Showed the dash cam video to the cops...they are now very keen to see the driver, seemingly he will be up for a charge of driving without due care and attention / careless driving (or whatever its called nowadays), mainly as there was a solid white line on his side of the road. So even without a stop sign, he should have come to a dead stop.

My mate was convicted of dangerous driving a couple of years ago, after having nearly the same accident that you nearly did. He overtook a car on a straight road and someone pulled out of a side road with stop markings. He was driving a Land Rover that oblierated the Yaris, but luckily both drivers were ok. The reason he was told he was convicted is because you should not overtake where there is a adjoining road or entrance!

A bloke run up my o/s rear this time last yr, as I prepared to turn right. Reckoned he could of got past me, before I would have started to turn. My insurance co couldn't understand that it was againest the law to overtake over a junction. And was going to pay him out, until I threatened action.

...I am not keen on the modern fashion for dip and main on seperate lamps on some bikes. It just looks like one has failed and is distracting, even when you know.

Neither am I, so when I bought a Fazer which only had one light on for dip I dumped the standard lights

My 1946 Riley switched the offside headlamp off for dip, just dipping the nearside. They changed to both lamps dipping in 1947. It also only had one brake light, and the tail lights were narrow strips each side of the number plate. The black paint and trafficators completed the safety package.

Hi, That link is for South Australian rules, It's bad enough with the EU telling us what to do. Having said the the UK highway code covers it in rule 167.

Yes, he should, I agree. My point was that mrfuzzy seemed to think it was ok to overtake at a junction.

Hi, While the highway code is advisory or a guide virtually all of it is based on or written into law.

A lot of bikes have LED lights now which appear silly-bright, and even those that don't, the headlight is higher than on most cars so may appear to be on main beam when it isn't.
My Pan Euro runs twin headlamps, having two dipped and two main beams. I fitted HIDs (let's leave the arguments out of it please ) of the solenoid-operated type so there's only one filament and the solenoid moves the reflector to change the beam-spread... accompanied by a loud clonk, much to the amusement of my MOT tester who thinks that Honda have gone back to using some pre-war design
As the Pan has electric headlamp levelling I can soon move them if, say, a pillion's weight tips the beams up a bit.

The downside on my car is all the instuments are invisible until the dash lights up...

And a trick some of my older Land Rovers had, was the ability to switch the dash lights off while the exterior lights were on.

The Saab button is smart though .... all dimmed out and gauges off - bottom half of speedo lit up too about 60mph and if you then increase speed into un-lit area it lights up and then goes off again when you drop back - same sort of thing with gauges e.g fuel gauge drops into reserve - automatically lights up and come back to life, temp gauge gets too warm, lights up....etc

That's far too clever and complicated for my liking, I'll admit it's a great feature when the car in newish and it all works but just give it a few years for the electrical gremlins start, then it'll either be unfixable or cost a fortune to fix and the car will be scrapped as uneconomical to repair.

Mine is 10 years old adn still working at present - you can also dim the dash in the usual way

Clearly driving along in the dark without lights is wrong, and as bad as driving (and increasingly often these days, cycling) with excessive lighting.

However, my posting referred to the habit many people seem to fall into of driving faster than the conditions merit, simply because they can see the oncoming cars lit like Christmas trees lights from quite a distance away, when the rest of the world is unlit (meaning signs, trees, parked vehicles, pedestrians, corners). Maybe I should have made that clearer.

Fair enough then, my grips is people who don't light up as soon as it's getting dull.
