can someone clarify at what visibilty can you drive with fog lights?

Front fogs drive me insane, selfish idiots driving around in normal visibility with them switched on because they think it makes them look sporty.

Like DrShox, if I can see 3/4/500 yards and farther, cannot those numtpies. Really, really pees me right off.
I do not think you are allowed to use them in 30mph areas either, not that that makes a ha'peth of difference.
I also heard an idiot on an idiot radio station telling drivers to use their fog, high intensity rear, lights because it was going to be foggy.

On newer cars, a lot like Volvo's over the years, have headlights on permanently.
Fog lights have also now become driving lights on new vehicles too.
A lot of front fog lights now 'cannot' be turned off once you put the headlights on. Rear ones of course are a pain in the backside!

I mentioned this to my brother in law but he is in advertising so has little common sense and everything is image rellated with him
The beam pattern of front foglights, i.e. low with a sharp cutoff, and placement as far from the driver's line of vision as is possible, are there to improve the driver's ability to see ahead in extremely foggy conditions, by providing off-axis illumination of the road ahead. Headlights need to be switched off to maximise the benefit, so they don't illuminate the fog the driver is trying to see through.
The purpose of rear fogs is to allow the vehicle to be seen from further away.
That's the theory and much seems to have been lost in translation, as evidenced by what is seen on the roads these days. They are basically a pain, used inappropriately far too often. One major Gerrman car manufacturer puts the foglights in the headlight cluster, which is just plain wrong!!

Interesting: There is a poser along our road who loved his fogs/driving spots so much he wired them into his headlamps, the car failed it's mot because they were not on an independent switch.

This isn't possible though, or not at least on the Vauxhall, BMW, Citroen or Volkswagen on my drive.
Front, and rear fogs can only be illuminated when the headlights are too.

If they were wired in permanently with the headlights, would they not technically fall under the same tests as those, with regards to beam pattern, height etc.? Sounds like that could easily be a grey area open to interpretation.

That was his argument, the tester replied that because they came on with the headlamps they were no longer classed as independent fog lights, he appealed and lost.

As far as the test goes they don't exist

Aye, but if you think about it, a spot lamp is only such until it becomes part of the permanent headlamp circuit. It then technically becomes a headlamp, as it has no independence from the circuit. If it's completely under the control of the headlamp circuit, that by virtue denotes it as a headlamp.
The obvious way around that one would be to just use a toggle or rocker switch inline and leave it constantly on.
