Flywheel ring gears and starters

My dad currently has a couple of 'project cars' and both were originally hand cranked for starting, he's getting on a bit now and has realized that he probably wont be able to turn them over fast enough by hand to start them - especially since one is nearly 3 liter!

Any idea where we can look for ring gears and starters? Machining the flywheel's wont be a problem but buying ring gears based on size instead of make/model isn't so easy.

To give you an idea of one the cars I'm talking about, It a Buick Model 10 which should look like the one below when finished, its currently in about 500 pieces in 30 different boxes Oh, and there's currently no body work...

you could always measure your flywheel then get in touch with an aftermarket clutch manufacturer and ask what car / van would have the same size flywheel

Would it be possible to use something like a cordless impact wrench with an adapter to crank the engine? That way one wrench can do many cars, and the car stays original.

I haven't looked at the torque or RPM of any though.

Might not it be easier to modify a small flywheel to attach to the front pulley ?
If low compression engine what about a belt driven starter as used on stop/start petrol golf buggies.
Don't F1 race cars have a seperate starter than the pit crew use ?

my mate starts his morgan with a dynastart unit similar to this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VIRE-6-7-12-DYNASTART-unit-starter-dynamo-MD2-/230398343595 and it would be more in keeping with the vehicles
the only thing is he had to run a poly vee belt to get the drive through a small section pulley and that starts a high compression V twin we did talk about using the decompressor as you do with big singles when kick starting to get the flywheel effect but if you have a setting to completely close the throttles for starting , this also works, until the engine is spinning then open the throttle it starts and then resets automatically to the idle position a little like a chain saw start possition

Folding wings or you can take them off completely with one bolt.

it would be great to have a plane, all that freedom from traffic and great views when ever you felt like it and best of all it tows behind your car and fits in the garage

Thanks for all the replies! Definitely some things to think about, something attached to the engine would be best, otherwise I've got vision of stalling the engine in traffic and having to jump out....

Are the dynastarts any good? they always seemed a bit of a compromise to me, the gearing being too high for a starter but too low for a dynamo.

I tried to swing one of the engines a few weeks ago and it was bl**dy hard work to spin it for more than a few seconds fast enough for a decent spark, it should get easier when it runs in a bit.

I'm looking forward to taking the Buick out for a run, 2.7 liter and probably just a straight pipe for an exhaust, apparently they're good for 70mph flat out with not much body work it'll probably feel like 170!

There's a knack to hand starting an engine, otherwise you can go more than a full revolution before you hit the firing stroke, much like starting a big 4banger

Yep it like I keep telling the wife she hasnt got the KNACK-AS I HAVE ,thats when I usually get a clip in the knackas, and she tells me I dont need em as hers are bigger

well as said my mate uses one on his 11:1 Vtwin and that fires no problem charges at 20amps, I think, not high, but he has converted most of the lights to leds so can run halogens in the head lights and that is MUCH better than how MR Morgan designed it in the first place
the dynamo used to run off the back drive sprocket !
and the beauty is it even looks like a old dynamo and is in keeping, his only problem was the size of pulleys he was restricted to, as it would slip with normal vee belts so had to go with polyvee to get the drive from 2-3" pulleys.

Sounds promising, 20 amps will be adequate and the lights will be getting led / halogen conversions, the rear lights were originally oil wicks and the headlights were acetelyne!

Thinking about It i reckon a dynastart with a modern electronic charge controller will function a lot better than they used to
