I got some mig wire and some of it is flux core wire. Can this be used in a gas mig if I don't use the gas. I know this may sound like a daft question.
Also check that it is flux core, There is also dual shield, which is flux core but also requires a gas shield. Read the writing on the box, (ask me how i know )
There are hundreds of FC welding wires and no written rule that applys to them all apart from you never push with them or you'll likely get inclusions as the slag gets into a leading position.
Many are dual shielded some better in mix some straight Co2
Some are all positional/down hand only and as you say some are open arc (protect them selves don't need gas).
Polarity also varies with the wire. They are not all negative. Some run pos some are happy in either.
