hi guys have a choice of coded pipe welding courses 1 19weeks and the other 33 weeks the longer one teaching flux core welding.i don't think its much use to me.whats it used for.

You should maybe re-post this question in the 'Learning MIG welding' section of the forum as it may not have too many views here.

Flux core is a type of MIG welding. Instead of a solid wire, the wire is a tube with the centre (core) filled with flux. Some flux core can be used without gas; some requires gas.

Specialised applications for various types of flux cored welding.
Some areas of use for gas shielded flux cored welding are:
Shipbuilding
Pipe welding
Structural steelwork
Maintenance/repair welding

Self shielded:
Site structural steel
Bridge repair/building
Plant repair/hard facing

This is by no means exhaustive but gives you an idea. Larger fabrications are often done with some form of flux cored wire because of the increased productivity and higher mechanical strength values than commonly used solid wires.

I know what it is .its only where I come from ive no heard any1 using it. I hope to go travelling to either oz or Canada.im just wondering is it worth the extra few weeks.

I mainly weld galvanized steel square tubing. E71T-11 (AWS coding) flux core wire is far better than any other type of wire (flux or not) for this type of jobs. For other mild steels, you can use a good quality (means a bit more expensive) E71T-GS flux core wire. Both require NO Gas and Reverse Polarity (DCEN on torch, Positive on ground). E71T-11 is very common in USA, but totally unknown in Greece, where I live. I order one 5Kg roll (0.9mm) of Hyundai SuperShield 11 from an ebay seller located in Spain. Very deep penetration and low spatter. Later I asked the local rep. of INE to bring some rolls of the INETUB BA71T11. IMO, the INE wire has better spreading and weldings have softer appearance, but Hyundai has deeper penetration.

I'd definately go for the longer course, the more experience you have the more employable you will be. FCAW is used on higher quality fabrications

I can recommend the Nitetsu range of cored wires. Copper coated and tubular (seamless) so it feeds really well unlike some and due to being seamless the flux can't absorb moisture.

what type of Nitetsu flux wire have you used?

SF-1A and SF-3A, only just got access to the full range so I've yet to try the others.

I have used the above and found it good been using elga recently its ok too
Worst stuff ive used was sif like a roman candle going off still got the scars

Fcaw has an advantage of speed and increased productivity over solid wires in conventional process gmaw* The burn off rate is higher because the current is passed through the tube rather than a solid mass. The powders inside the tube create both the composition and the slag deposit.
All position fc wires can be used in Spray transfer in all positions even open roots (with a backing tile) which can achieve more than double the travel speed of a solid wire doing the same job.
* I say conventional gmaw process but there are exceptions with certain solid wire rooting processs like Lincoln’s STT. This is a down hand open root with no backing and a solid wire. In capable hands will run rings round flux core vertical roots.

Round these parts anything other than Nittetsu is a tough sell. Hence getting it on board, I got so sick of trying to convince firms to re-procedure on an alternative I decided if you can't beat them join em.
