flipping blow through

Hi
Im tryign to weld some repair patches into my escort and it keeps on blowing through every time i try to run a small weld. And most of the time when i just tack things in
Im not leaving a huge gap between the panels - say about 0.8-1.2mm?

Im using 1mm repair panels and got the power setting onto 3 (power setting 2 doesnt penetrate)

is there a reason for the blow through? i knw it has to sound like sizzling bacon and stuff like that

One theory is that the reel of wire slips on the occasion?

If the wire speed is too high will the wire push through the pool of weld?


Any help would be appreciated

What machine, what size wire, what gas...etc.
Difficult to advise without more details, we could say try this and try that only to find that you're using something horrendous like a Kende or similar.
You aren't are you?
I'm assuming not as you say setting 2 won't penetrate.
If the wire feed rollers were slipping you'd most likely get the wire burning back to the tip.

you would be better with no gap at all, it's harder to avoid blow through with a gap?

The gap will make it more likely to blow through.

Is it blowing through the panel or are you burning the edges away? As mentioned above you should not be leaving a gap on something so thin. Are you using pre-made panels or could you get some slightly thicker sheet, 18g to give you a bit more edge to work with. Filling the gap is harder than laying a run on top of existing metal and overlapping onto the thin stuff and is not always a better solution if you can't get a heat sink behind the join.

The power setting is too high - that's why it is blowing through. Ideally also you won't want a gap when welding 1mm.

Best way to sort it would be to figure out why it won't penetrate on lower settings. Is the weld just sitting on top at the lower settings? If so are you using plain CO2 gas? That doesn't support an arc properly on some welders on low settings.

Otherwise what welder do you have and which shielding gas? Might be worth posting pictures of a bead of weld on spare metal on the first 3 settings so we can try to identify the problem.
