Hi,
I'm planning on doing a few mods to a motorcycle frame using a MIG. I've had a search but can't see exactly what I'm looking for so thought I'd ask...
I'm basically only welding small brackets and thin flat sheet to the round frame tubing. All the stuff I know about is welding sheet to sheet, such as car body panels, etc. One of the mods I want to make is to weld a tray for a battery between two parts of the frame and not sure if it matters how I weld it, as it's not structural.
Had a bit of time at work so I did some art for you....
In my head I see it being welded from the top to the side of the tubing, so the welds are hidden away and chamfering the edge of the piece to be welded. Is this okay? Maybe the chamfers not necessary?
Can anyone clarify if there is a best technique to use to weld sheet metal to round tubing?
Also, if there are any other considerations I should know about prepping and technique, such as heating the frame with a blow torch to help start a puddle, etc?
I'm sure there must be a few members on here that have a wealth of experience with this sort of stuff. It'd be great to get some tips and advice regarding best practice, etc. Definitely can't find a book on Amazon about this.
Thanks !!
