Flat powder coat

Hi.

I just received back a tank that has been powder coated , from 4/5 foot away it looks all nice and shinny like it should do , but when you get close you can see the orange peel effect, although its not bad its still there and I would rather it not be, so I was wondering if its possible to flat it like you would with a normal paint job and buff it back up again to a nice flat shinny Finnish.

Its supposed to be smooth a finnish .

Maybe you should query the quality of finish with the painters. The only time our smooth finish isn't great is if we have left deep grinding marks or scratches in the work

Maybe this might have been the case after the tank had been stripped ready for re coating , I don't know what the condition of the tank was like underneath the original paintwork to start with , but that is not important now after its been done , I just wanted to know if I could flat it out and polish it back.

It's just the same as paint, you can sand it and polish it back up.

Not tried it yet, myself. Would you have to be careful about building up heat from the polisher?

Sometimes if its not held at a decent temperature for long enough it doesn't let the powder let and flow properly, you can do no harm warming it up and reflowing the paint

You can however flat it and lacquer it.

Nope it's a paint, unless it was Nylon coated. I'm a powdercoater and our supplier/manufacture confirms it's a paint. It made up of the same sort of things, pigments, fillers bonding agent and hardener. Except the hardener is heat activated, when it's made they are all mixed then extruded with a little heat to bind into a course kibble. Then it's milled and sieved to make the powder.

Sometimes it is a lack of cure time and temp, but unless it's a bulky item that has a lot mass and was slow to heat up it wont be that. You can over cure them too.

Lack of coating thickness compared to the flow of the powder cause's orange peel, I'd say it's more likely that coating is too thin.

Some powders flat and polish better than other's, has it been powder lacquered as well?

The actual feel and look of it would suggest its not a thin coating , its not been lacquered, its just a high gloss black polly.

Black polyester should buff up fine, just hit a hidden small area with 1500g and then G3 as a test. When I say thin I mean in relation to the build and flow of the powder, our black needs twice as much to cover and flow flat as does our grey for example.
