The small one is the best I have used for flaring steel on the job

I don't think there is anything better for use on a vehicle. I bought mine after cross-threading an old one of the same style (had an aluminium block) and it's so easy to use even on steel and makes a perfect flare.
A 16mm ratchet spanner is important to go with it mind, it makes the job so easy.

There are cheaper flaring tools which do several sizes and I find them OK and capable of doing steel but for the little extra these cost if all you need is 3/16" brake pipes don't hesitate, it's a good piece of kit.

Not sure but always use Cunifer as opposed to copper or steel.

I've got the snap on/bluepoint version of this kit and it works fine as long as you make sure the pipe hasn't been crushed slightly while cutting it.I poke an awl down the tube before flaring it.

This is the easy part. There are two basic sizes of brake lines. The smaller size is 3/16"/4.75mm brake line, CNF-3; and the larger size is 1/4" CNF-4. 3/16" is found on virtually all cars and trucks made in the world. 1/4" brake line is most frequently found in short pieces between the master cylinder and ABS pump, the long run to the rear of full sized cars, trucks and hydraulic clutch lines. Cars and trucks in the 50's frequently had all 1/4" line.

Well aside from one very short pipe into the master cylinder on a series II land rover I have never encountered a car with anything other than 3/16" pipe. But i'm a farm mechanic so have not experienced as much as a car mech so if any of them say different it's worth noting.
I did once ask my local garage for some 1/4 fittings (not uncommon on tractors) and was told they don't have them as he's never (been in that job 16 years) found anything other than 3/16 on a car. That's from a backstreet garage who seem to get just about anything in through the door.

As to why that set shows two tools and is twice the price I don't know. I can't read the listing, or it might be that if you make it more expensive someone will buy it because it must be better

Some of the Jeep 4/4 range use 1/4 main brake pipes
Most cars are just 3/16

I have a set like the one with multiple size dies and only use the 3/16. I also have an old Moprod tool and now I found the instructions for it I can produce perfect single and double flares. I only use Kunifer for brakes it is not worth the difference going for copper is only a bit cheaper.

Citroen also use 1/4" on some vehicles, especially the 2CV.

My old Sykes is over 30 years old and as good as new, it has the capability for vice mounting and the handle so you can flare in situ under a vehicle, it produces both single and double flares and although expensive at the time, it has paid for itself many times over. The benefit of buying quality I suppose.

Last big brake job I did was a Vectra B front to rears, tried flaring the steel but gave up, then found 2 connectors on the bulkhead. Bit of swearing and manoeuvring and they came undone no problem

Most manufacturers have joints front & rear on the main pipes

As others have said you will find 1/4" pipe is used a lot in car/truck apps but I cant remember ever using the bigger sizes in the sykes set. The gadget hanging on the side of the box will put a flare on steel pipes up to 1" but that just a single flare used on truck steel air pipes, its one op not two as in op1/op2 brake flaring. Also worth noting that its best not to use roller cutters if you want to flare the steel pipes, its just work hardening them more than you need. Its best to cut with a junior hacksaw,debur ,chamfer and flare using a drop of brake fluid for lube.

£33 is expensive...?
That one doubleboost linked to on page 1 which I also use has no trouble whatsoever with all the steel pipes I use it on. I also always use a mini roller cutter when cutting pipe as it does a neat job with no swarf in the pipes or deburring.

This is the one i have used over a few years and works well - probaly find it cheaper than on Amazon at £72. ( I think I paid aout £70 all up including a coil of pipe, some unions and a pipe cutting tool and de-burring tool)
It does Saab pipes and they are pretty tough. Also bought a pipe staightening tool and a pair of forming pliers for bends if not forming aoround something.
