Looks like Acetone is a chemical you can still purchase,I think we all agree that it has to be treated with respect,gloves and mask.I do agree with you though it is an exellent product.(No need to go to the pub after working a shift with this stuff!!!)

I think he was getting mixed up with brake cleaner mabye?
I've heard brake cleaner is really bad when welding.
and surely if acetone was that bad then someone would be selling something as a safer alternative by now?....
I dunno, the amount of chemicals that are available these days. I imagine a bit of acetone is probably fairly tame (though still to be treated properly)

I use acetone to clean when tigging stainless, never had a issue or problem, the brake cleaner thing is a myth, Pete (hotrodder) put up a myth buster earlier.
Unfortunately this is how myths are started, someone posts a comment without knowing and it just gets out of hand from the getgo

See what you mean. Not everyone can take what sombody says on a forum as correct. That's why I only give info I'm %100 sure on. I heard the brake cleaner can give of chemicals if the residue is heated. Didn't bother me too much as I have allways used acetone anyway.

iirc, the brake cleaner issue was the welder cleaned the part with brake cleaning fluid. Then TIG welded the part, there was some reaction with the argon gas/heat and a chemical in the brake cleaner.
It was in the USA, and iirc, Hotrodder has pointed out that the chemical constituent that caused the alleged problem is not present in cleaners in europe as far as is known.
The source of the issue was from an article written by a chap who contributes to a motorcycle magazine I used to read. I gave up on it because many of the contributors were sometimes waffling to make their article word count.
I don't doubt the gent was affected by the fumes, but the article did spread like wildfire, and the bit where he said it was a reaction with the argon got missed, and cans of brake cleaner went flying into bins worldwide I would imagine.
I still use acetone for some m/s jobs and always will, for ally I dont bother now, unless I have wire brushed a badly oxidised bit.
Back to flap discs, I have just used one for grinding welds off on an aluminium job I did. It was a used disc and it worked ok, did not clog up much,and if it had it would not have bothered me cos it was a used one.
I have a grinding disc specially for ally but its obviously more aggressive and leaves heavier scoring. So the super flap disc gets another tick in my fave bits of metalworking kit.
