flagstone transportationalisation question

Been given some old 3 x 2 flagstones (old as in old money) now these things are big and old and heavy and made in blighty (all of which you fellas on here seem to like)

So my conundrum lies herein: They're currently residing about 35 miles away, and there's twenty-odd of them, so it's gonna take a fair few trips to ferry them home in the picasso. What van do you reckon I would need to hire to re-home them in (preferably) one or (if needs be) two trips?

Sounds like a job for a 3.5 tonne pickup to me. Or any 3.5 double wheeler.

Or how many do you think it would be safe to put in an LWB tranny van?

I recently shifted 8 of those type of slabs in my Frontera and I would say it was at its limit.I would prob go for a big transit

Ask the person who has the slabs to put one on some bathroom scales then multiply the weight by the number of slabs to give you the total weight , probably around 40 - 50 kg per slab tho.

Watch the cost if you need to hire a vehicle those flags are going to be very expensive. Check the new price delivered to your door.

You'll need to guess the weight then. Say 50kg a pop - 20 of them is a tonne. A 3.5 tonne pickup, even a Toyota Hilux, would take those.

I reckon dense concrete is 150lbs per cu foot, so a 3' x 2' x 2" slab converted to new money is .027 cu mtrs, thats 66.8 kg, some of those old slabs are granite based and may be a bit heavier, 22 off at least 1469 KG.

You should get away with a 35 cwt transit pick up, if you only have 20 slabs one trip should do it.

22 all in all. Got them from an old lady so the bathroom scales option is out (for more than one reason unfortunately...)

I've costed up new ones, and the cheapest I can find is £5.39 per slab + VAT + delivery, and they are for the 600 x 600 rather than 3' x 2'

That makes hiring a van a much cheaper option. Sadly.

I can hire a LWB tranny with a 1500kg max payload for £42.50 for a day, even if there is vat to pay on there (I'm guessing there is just by the fact it works out at exactly £50) that's loads cheaper

You also have the advantage that you are using old stone, which will have weathered so it will look loads better than shiny new stuff.

We bought a whole pallet of 3x2 slabs, 50mm thick, I might be wrong but I'm sure it was about £30 inc delivery? That was from a local builders merchant
