Fixing my mistake - cast iron arc welding

This was a result of pumping it up to 11 with the duck bill lodged in a subframe.

SIP have sent me a new one no questions asked so this is now spare.

I am thinking instead of just junking it I might arc weld the casting back together.

Do I need to preheat it much bearing in mind there are seals inside? I will grind out a V and arc weld using rods like these:

If it failed when new, will it be stronger after you repair it? Or will it fail in a situation where you least need it to?

I'd not. I'd shorten the other part to match.

It won't be as strong after welding it but might still be useful. It shouldn't be too hard as the end is open so it'll be able to shrink post welding without cracking due to internal stress, which is the usual problem to overcome. I'd wrap the other end in a wet rag to protect the seals and have at it. Just my two cents, I'll be interested to see what others say.

Yes that's an option too. Cut off the other end and use this one where I can jamb it in and pump like hell.

And use the new replacement complete one for more careful work.

Sure it's cast iron? I'd expect a steel casting or forging in that application...

Or you could just leave it as is and use it as an expensive door wedge?

Last time I did a small bit of cast stuff for someone, I used Nickel rods... kind off fizzed and spat a bit but seemed to work OK and hasn't broken again ( as yet)
