I got a cheapish generic mask (think it was about £45 - I bought it as it had a deeper viewing pane than the £20 ones) a couple of years back, and it's performed well.
Recently, though, it would stop darkening and the "low battery" light would flicker - Sherlock Holmes not required here, huh?
Err, nope. Batteries arrived from Amazon tonight - fitted them and exactly the same erratic behaviour: Low light flickers and sometimes it would darken when you pressed the test switches and other times not.
It was ready for the bin anyway so nothing to lose opening it up...
Adjusters for shade and sensitivity, a test switch and a low battery lamp. Two CR2045 batteries fitted to the bottom.
No screws, but a bit of prying with a small blade got it opened up:
At first I thought the battery connectors would be loose, but they seemed pretty solid.
So I levered the bottom PCB up and the three wires looked a bit loose:
Yup - holding the battery into the terminals with my fingers and moving the board around caused the unit to flash off and on. Time to cut the leads back and re-connect them:
Snapped the unit back together again and it's as good as new
