Fitting uPVC door

So me dear old mum has bought a cheap flat, it was a re-posession after the previous owners passed away, I need to replace the front door.

Just looking to confirm that I would pull out the old door, wooden frame and facing then fix the new door frame directly to the brickwork? Some facing boards to cover up any gap if necessary?

When ordering a made to measure door I presume the actual door doesn't change in size but rather the frame?

Frame is made to fit your opening. Brick to brick floor to lintel
Door size is governed by the frame size

Give yourself 10mm all around to pack and level/square the frame
Foam it. Screw it. Then cap with trim

Just measure the frame you have as that fits you know the replacement will, pack new door and don't ovet tighten frame and make sure it stays even gap with the door, it's pretty straight forward.

I can see a couple benefits to replacing the frame, no chance of rotting and no continued maintenance.

Also let's me lower the door a couple inches to help me dear old mums knees.

Be careful of this, I thought the same and lowered the door a bit as well as having a low profile step. Didn't realise till carpet went back in the door wont open! result is the underlay is missing in front of the door, and will be making a mat well...

The guys who replaced the old door at this place did the opposite .. they measured to the screed , totally wrecking the old frame & door when they removed it , consequently I could not get my electric wheel chair over the new two inch high threshold … I didn't pay for the door .

Now with the whole place being triple glazed a few months ago everything is hunky dory the door has 8 mm clearance above the thin door mat set on the hall carpet .


Re the mat well years ago I made an all steel tray for the conservatory's outside double patio door with securing holes and got it dip galvanized … one of my better decisions as the one my mate did for his home without galvanising , it rusted up quite nicely after four years of being put in .

So, she's decided on a composite door, fair enough.

Brick to brick and floor to lintel dimensions appear to be bigger than what is available to order.

I popped the facing off the inside to see what was going on, the wooden frame has a massive gap all around it?

What's the standard procedure there, frame it out first?

A made to measure door imperial rather than

an off the shelf one that is metric dimensions , thought it could have been a mis-measured door sold off cheap . How old is the building ? Imperial or metric brick work ?

OK the made to measure one will be metrified . Check the diagonals of the door & the opening just incase the opening is lozenged one diagonal considerably bigger than the other , ( pushed to one side a bit ) as a true squared door will need to be smaller & inserted in the lozenge
