If its that SHT hedge trimmer Mr Wolf a new piston and ring ( 038 +037) is less than £11. Waz a hone down the bore and see if it cleans up, if not a new barrel is only £22, All in stock

you might find if you get the ring fitted and filed up ok , against all odds it might run ok
remember as well as the gap you have to have clearance each side of the retaining pin

I found a thing about piston knurling, I think it may have been in a harley RL service manual.
It was something like. Get two files. Clamp your piston in a vice, clamped lightly between the two files.
Get two hammers and hammer the two files into the vice at the same time; it should rotate the piston and knurl the skirt.
I read that in the 70's and I still haven't tried it.
Is the ring diameter too large? If so gapping it will not reduce the diameter and squeezing into a bore that's too small may put it under undue stress.
the sum of the pin clearance should be,slightly more than the fitted ring gap its not criticalthe same clearance all the way round the pin
or just top and bottem of the pin
eg round the pin could be a bit bigger if i over file it ?
