Fitting oil seal

Hi,
I could do with a bit of advice on how to fit an oil seal without damage. It's the input shaft of a hydrostatic drive unit on a mower. The drive is a Tuff Torq K46 incase anyone's interested. I don't want to remove the shaft if I can avoid it. I can remove the old seal OK but it's fitting the new one that's giving me grief.

The problem is the the shaft has a circlip groove just above the seal, so the lip of th seal wants to catch in the groove and doesn't want come out. I tried plastering everything with grease but that didn't do the trick.

Any pointers appreciated.

Thin pvc electrical tape ?

Or maybe thick ptfe sealing tape.

wrap a layer on the shaft to guide the seal past the groove.

Ive used very thin plastic like a milk bottle container cut into a strip and wrapped around the shaft, slide the seal over it and the slip the plastic out

Thanks. I think something along the tape or plastic film might work. The shaft is 15mm diameter, I'm not sure how much thicker the seal will fit over. And I'll need to be able to pull it out once the seal's fitted. That might mean film would be better than sticky tape.

These hydraulic pump/motor seals have no scope, they wont take the plastic sleeve/tape trick. Wipe a finger full of body filler in the grove, tidy it up and slip the seal into place,then clean out the grove.

I’ve just used ordinary writing paper ( Oil Soaked ) with no problems at all.
