fitting a used wood burner

ive been and uttery confused myself again, currenty we have an open fire place that we dont use as it uses an incredible amount of wood to do not a lot,

putting a liner in the chimney dosent seem like to much hard work, but the sticking point for me is going to be the wood burner, its a big room and atm i'm feeling quite poor, what im wondering is where do i stand with fitting a used wood burner. ? looking for something in the 8-14 kw range, locally there are various i think sutable wood burners fow a few hundred quid rather than a few k

if you buy somthing that you can tell what it is (ie you can go to a website, and say its "this") then building control wont care where the thing came from.

if you buy an odd-ball, then they still, probably, wont care, so long as you say "its X kw, and so ive installed this this and this..."

ps. the time to buy 2nd hand log burners is in the summer - but obviously if you want it now, then you have to buy it now

Similar here, once up to temp we have to close it right down, our living room often goes into the 30's

thats good so id get away with some old vintage thing as long as i know what it is and what its rated at yes ideally summer would have been ideal but summer went all wrong this year, i threatened to do this last year but stuff got in the way, i'm going to have to sort out lining chimeny ect if i can actually get materials ( thats been the game with workshop build.

i hear what your saying tho what i hear is quite a few woodburners are "derated " to 5 kw for the regs. so they apprently often do more also the room is massive and this place is stone built its allways cold, just measured it as 5m x 8m x 2.5m and i think given half a chance all the heat will go straight up through the floor and it going to need to be a fair size to look right

Biggest regret was fitting a stove. In a new house with good insulation as standard and heating fine tuned to half a degree and then lighting a stove which is an uncontrolled heat source, our room gets that hot that the door must be left open and all windows opened.

One like this should be 1 thousand max.
Maybe it will suit you coz youve a big room.
I feel its more for open planning.
That stove has a built in air supply to the back so when your not using the stove you'll not have a big vent giving a draft into the room.

if it;s not to late get one with a back boiler......then plumb it in to the central heating....
I bought a huge wood burning one used from Germany....all cast iron......1mWx700Hx400D
when built it will do the under floor heating for a 1 bed bungalow and the workshop....
I made sure it wil come to bits just in case the boiler casting leaks....if so I'll make a new'un from heavy ST/Steel plate.....
try to think long term.....

fogot to say, most people burn wood here for heating.....open fires...
mind the real bad weather only lasts about 6-8weeks and rarely below freezing.....

That’s a fair size room. If I remember correctly, ours was sold as a 4kw but is really a 5kw. As you say it was to get by the regs. Ours isn’t in a hearth, it’s sit on a plinth, we get all the heat from the fire and off the flue. A friend bought a secondhand burner which still cost a few hundred, needed bits and pieces to get it serviceable. Bits were no longer available, do your homework before buying.

Our lounge is about thr same size as yours (but insulated) and we have a 5kw burner and it does get very hot if you let it burn too hard.
I think there's some kind of regulation break at less then 5kw but can't remember what!
If it's an old house then who's to say it 'must have been there for years'.....

Stoves rated 5kW or less don’t need any purpose provided ventilation. Lots of stoves are rated at this output to make them more appealing as most people don’t want an air vent. In reality many stoves rated at 5kW will actually give out much much more possibly peaking somewhere around 12-15 kW. The output of a stove is calculated from the average output of a full burn cycle so going from say 200 grams of embers, adding 1.5 kg of logs, and data logging fuel mass and flue gas properties until the logs are burnt and it’s back to a 200 gram firebed. Most stoves are throttled back to around 30- 50% secondary air for testing to give better efficiency. Test rigs are built on large sensitive platform scales. Most people don’t use their stoves like this.

We fitted a secondhand Charnwood stove about 4 years ago, First problem you will come across is that the chimney will almost certainly need lining. The liner & stove need to be installed by a Hetas approved installer & have a certificate to say so.
Of course anyone is free to fit what they like diy but if your house burns down or someone dies from carbon monoxide poisoning your insurance company wont be happy that it was done hooky.
Most hetas installers will not install secondhand stoves, why would they when they can sell you a new one?
We were lucky in that we got a local company to do the new liner & install the stove who were fairly new on the scene & were prepared to fit a secondhand one.

2nd hand stoves seem to be cheap up here, at least if you're ok with doing the work to clean/repaint it and replace the glass and seals. The boss was looking for one and came across a big aarrow stove for £40, a month later he was offered something similar from someone else. Not bad considering the new equivalent is around £1000

fitted this 8/9 yrs ago. Was an insert stovax riva 66 (12kw). I fitted sides, base and top. Sits in an open livingroom/kitchen approximately 7x8m.

there is no way you can run this stovewith the doors closed, you would melt. Leaving ALL doors up and down stairs allows the air to move about, heating the whole house. Its currently 22* up stairs. And 18* in my workshop

The other route is to get building control to sign off.

That is 100% acceptable, regardless of what a hetas engineer might like to say.

There are no certs required for installation, same as oil, but not like gas.

we had building works on the go at thetime I fitted the stove, just amended the application. only cost 25quid. However applying to just fit a stove maybe more than a HETAS fitting may chanrge

Our charge, about 6 years ago, was £180 to sign off two stoves at the same time.

Different councils vary, but my friends charge in a different county was very similar.
