As 8ob says, alternators that have a 'W' (Wave) connection is just a tapping off one phase of the alternator, if yours doesn't have a wave connector on the outer case, it's simple to take a wire from any of the three stator phase wires where they attach to the main Diode set. A Cheapanese laser tacho will allow you calibrate your dashboard tacho accurately once you've painted a white line or stuck some silver tape on the crank pulley.
A laser tacho sounds a fun thing to have. I wouldn't mind getting my boat engines tacho'd up as well, once I get my head round the methodology.
Thanks for the very helpful replies everyone.
I remember a lad calibrating his electronic rev counter with 50hz[mains].
I had a knackered[brand new] suzuki rev counter that for some strange reason I decided to stick on my land rover.
I added a rev counter IC to the rev counter and used the signal from an old ABS sensor bolted near the back of my cam.
I calibrated it with a bit of paper with lines on and the fluorescent light.
Had a tacho on a boat that was just an alloy block that clamped onto one of the injector pipes and had wires leading from it, I guess I sensed the pulses, it was a single cylinder diesel engine but I think they made them for multy cylinder engines as well. It was made by Tiny tach.
I bet someone on retro rides has done this already, i know most of my pug old diesels had a rev counter on inclusing one od my 205xd versions so the bit might be out there.
