So I've my first MIG welder is on the way, gas and wire in hand but in terms of practicing what should I get?

    Skeet of metal different sizes?
A bit of a pannel from a scrap yard? Etc.

    Thanks all

Just scrap offcuts in a variety of thicknesses, cleaned well with a grinder + wire brush [use appropriate PPE always!!] will be good enough to get you started.

3mm is a good thickness to practice on. It is thick enough not to blow through easily and thin enough for most welders to cope with power wise.

Do people just weld straight on the steel and just work on the weld lines? Or has anyone a guide etc. I could look at steps from beginning

Free hand is fine. Do a figure of eight on flat plate to practice with. If it splatters then either turn speed down ever so gently or power up one notch
