First time spraying 2k

Hi, I'm about ready to start spraying my Hillman Imp starting with the underside while its still in the spit and I have a couple of questions... I'm painting in my garage (I have full suit and air fed mask) what would be the minimum temp I can paint in and how long between coats.

daytime temperature should be fine as its summer i usually wait around 5 mins between coats on a single panel,but doing the full floor, by the time you have gone end to end it will probably be more then 5 mins anyway, you can always test how far it has gone off by touching overspray on masking tape

to test between coats..touch the tape and if your finger gets paint on it wait a bit longer

when its ready you should just leave a print on the paint ..usualy 5-10 mins

Well I sprayed the underside and its turned out pretty well but I'm spraying on top of stone chip so the finish isn't to important. Today's question..... is how long does it take the paint to fully harden so I can start bolting cross-member and the suspension back on. I used fast hardener and it was about 20C when I painted it.

your data sheet should say

id try to wait 48 hours or more if possible

Sounds like your happy with the results. No stopping you now! Out of interest did you do it in the garage or did you move it all outside?

Andy, I painted it in the garage as it was a bit windy outside, though I covered up my workbenches etc. with old sheets I was surprised by the lack of mess there was very little over spray. The only problem I had was my spray gun was to big to get into some of the parts under the wheel arches and I had to borrow a small gun to get into these areas, luckily I noticed this before I started spraying. I'm going to buy a smaller gun for painting some of the parts inside the car.

I used to call it the wishbone on the Imp,got any pics? have not seen one on the road by me since the early 70's.

Bought one out of liverpool car auctions late 70's for £50,man that'd be worth a few bob now....not much rust on it neither....only problem with the imp was when on the motorways and wind if you were not carful you could be done for doing wheelies.

Ideally I would leave it a week as the surface wll harden but underneath could/will still be a touch soft.

Georgie, the wishbone bolt onto the cross-member (at the back) and onto brackets at the front. This is what it looked like when I got it

after a lot of this is the underside now, as suggested by langy I'm going to leave it until the weekend before I start fitting the suspension, no point rushing things now.

still a lot of body work to get done but I'm getting there, if anyone is interested I could do a build thread in projects I have 100's of pictures and could probably bore people to death.

Thats gotta have been laying in a field somewhere? the one I bought for £50 late 70's was marginally rusted and the engine needed some new shims,I thought it was gonna go for a couple of hundred and was over the moon getting it for 50 sovs.
