Seen it done loads of times.
Got fed up of the lathe leaking oil so decided to give it a go.
Went fine and very therapeutic. Gentle tapping with a hammer. Lovely job.
Little magnets very useful. Bought them for this job.View attachment 243683 View attachment 243684 View attachment 243685
I replaced the headstock cover gasket on the Harrison. Shifted my position and caught the bloody on/off switch with my leg. It’s amazing how far they will fling oilYou're not supposed to leave it like that - oil will go everywhere
I gave it a good coating of oil each side. You're not supposed to leave it like that - oil will go everywhere
Not so easy to take off again!Very nice, but should I point out that a bead of Loctite 518 (or any other such anaerobic sealer) would probably do the job better and be quicker and easier to apply...
I don't enjoy making gaskets very much, not an arts and crafts person I suppose.

You've never made a gasket?
Those magnets are cool, what are they called? Link please.
That brings back some memories, I had a little ball pein hammer just for doing those

Dont you just love looking at the condition of the gears on old machinery , take off a cover from a old tractor etc, always the same beautifull , well I think it is ,what looks like an old clunker to many shows its quality when the covers are off , nice gasket and easier to remove than a sealant stuck one , although long term the sealant will probably leak less.
I am ashamed to say I couldn't find a small ball pein hammer so I used a claw hammer - worked a treat - even for the screw holes
