Bought a cheapish Rohr welder (happy B'day to me!) last week, just to have a play really. Never tried Arc welding before, thought it might come in handy for repairing/building rose arches and other outdoor metalwork that I can't get the MIG (and bottle) to.
But yes, mostly just to have a play, learn something new.
First 3 tries (front and back), at increasing (indicated) amps (which I've now forgotten) from left to right. Maybe I should have started on something thicker than 2mm plate. I'm using some Ebay rods, 3.2.
Then I found some 5mm flat and had a play around with that.
Things learnt so far.
The supplied chipping hammer is carp.
The higher the amps the harder it is to chip the slag off.
It does not appear to be as difficult to do as I feared. I know those welds are crap, but I did only get a rod irretrievably stuck once, which was a surprise to me
I now need to go away and learn a bit more, rather than continuing to jump in with both feet.
Oh and the Rohr box I bought will supposedly do TIG too, so once some extras (gas, tungsten) arrive I shall have a go at that too.
EDIT: Ive no idea why the pictures are repeated below, I delete them and they just come back
