Cast iron drain pipe makes a good flue, if you can find it at a scrappy, tons on eBay for peanuts.

I made my flue out of offcuts of 1 mm stainless 6 " tube, it belts out heat the moment you light up the fire, I think its better than thick steel tube, you get double the heat radiated into the room.

Last one I built Steve, I used a wagon prop shaft, 3.5" dia, Worked a treat.

Cheers guys, those suggestions widen the field, I was in the belief anything less than 100mm would not work, will catch our local man with a van scrappy who does the rounds each week, ask him to keep me anything close to the sizes for future builds.

The ideal flue should not carry too great a heat, the fire grade at the bottom gets hotter if you burn hotter things for instance pallet wood against anthracite. Also how much of that fuel you stuff in.
I am sure this is all obvious but sometimes we break the obvious rules when we think at tangents

some guys on the forum have used 3" flues for rocket burners
they will still work however it effects the draw on the fire same with your draw at the chimney
also the same when your lighting your stove it can cause issues like smoke within a building or blowback
4" too 6" is recomended some systems go even higher on there flues due to whats is being burnt within the fire the bigger the firebox you need to consider a bigger flue

Wagon propshaft 0.060" wall thickness, ( I was surprised it wasn't thicker) Usually make mine with the flat top if time and material allows, the top on that one is 8mm plate,

I've got a wood fired water heater tank on my to do list. Water heating really canes the electricity meter, as does a shower.

I believe that the burning of wood is accepted as smokeless,ie you can burn it in a smokeless zone.
You have to let it dry untill it starts to radial crack before burning if using logs ?

I thought it was the stove burning the wood had to be defra exempt or have I missed the point?

Far as I know, the only real reasons for seasoning wood before burning are simple efficacy of burn and to limit creosote buildup in the flue?

Wood is carbon neutral, (it gives out no more when burnt than it ever consumed whilst alive), so technically classes as smokeless. It's a point I'd argue the toss on forever and a day if some jobsworth ever said otherwise.

Something like this would cut down the water heating bills. Just burn scrap pallet wood and any old rubbish.The internals would all be stainless of course, but its a simple fabrication. A vacuum jacket instead of insulation would be even better. The internal flue would have fins to increase the surface area, or perhaps a multi tube boiler ?

I'm afraid that's another urban myth, you can only burn wood in a smokeless zone if it's a defra approved stove designed for burning wood in a smokeless zone, otherwise you've got to burn smokeless approved fuel, ie anthracite, coke, manufactured smokeless fuel.
