Well, bit the bullet and had my first go with my new (to me) welder. Started with thin metal and it was absolutely horrible - holes, spitting and generally awful
Moved onto 3mm stuff and seemed to get on better. They are not all that good, but seemed to form a bead and welding two bits of the same thickness seemed to work (whacked it with a hammer and it didn't break apart) . Not sure about the penetration though - everyone tells me that the welds should penetrate, but I'm not sure by how much? Should you see the underside of the bead? Or is what I have (see pic) OK?
I now have to practice loads before trying anything too expensive!
