I fabricated my first gate a couple of months ago.
3 meters wide by 6ft 2 in height at centre of the arch.
However I had a call today from customer to say the t&g panelling had fell out. One side of the pannelling had fallen out and not the other.
The screws were all still in the 20mm box section held in by paint but they'd just ripped out of the wood. Very suprised.
When I came to put the wood back into the frame I noticed that the wood had now expanded by around half an inch and wouldn't fit back in.
So I took the end t&g piece out and fitted the rest back in. When I looked the the other side of the gate (wood that hadn't fell out) I could see some of the screws coming loose and some of the wood bending outwards.
I decided again to remove the furthers t&g piece. When I removed it there was a loud ping noise as if the frame was relieved all the pressure and stress had gone.
I'm pretty sure this is down to the heavy rainfall and expansion of the wood. The side that fell out possibly burst out under all the strain.
However this gate has always been rather heavy. the top of the post its hung from moves as the gate opens and closes. Its buried 3 foot deep so not likely to come out anytime but there does seem to be a lot of strain on it.
I'm just worried that the whole frame is going to ping open at some point.
Also when its hitting is stopping point its kind of vibrating, the gate feels a bit wispy and is bending when it hits the stop.
Just thought people might have some ideas what the problem is and how not to get it to fall out again or the frame to eventually ping open.. Im pretty certain the wood is expanding with the rain. But it could also be the addition of the gate vibrating when its hitting its stopping point. I can't slow down the motor r anything.
Should I add more section to the gate to make it stronger so it doesn't bend, wobble as much or would making the gate even heavier be worse....Im just stuck for ideas. I just want to walk away from it once and for all and not
Whats the best think to stop the gate vibrating when its hitting its stopper at the very botom corner of the gate?
