I haven't done much with TIG before, and nothing on stainless. However, I mentioned to a friend that I wanted to learn and told him what kit I had, and lo and behold, what turned up today but a handful of rods and some offcuts of plate.
The rods are stamped with 316L and a BS number, no idea what the plate is, but it is mirror finished, and used for making commercial kitchen units.
I have a kemmpi "super kempak" 150A just like this, a bottle of BOC pureshield argon, a flowmeter and reg, and associated "stuff".
These were done with 1.6mm tungsten sharpened at about 45degrees and a 1.6 rod.
As you can see, I'm very new to this...
The welds which are massively orange (right hand two) were about 40A, the rest done at about 30-35A. The big splodge in the middle is where I forgot to turn the gas on.
The arc seems quite nice and controllable, until I end up dipping the tungsten in the puddle anyway.
Should I be cleaning the steel? Does it matter for practice like this? The stuff I have comes with plastic tape over it to protect the mirror finish on it.
The backs of the welds are very oxidised, I was just holding the plate in vice, so back was exposed.
