First efforts with the Bantam

What is is you ask?

Well it enables me to use an ABS flange set clamped to my above ground pool liner to replace the original connectors, one side of the flange will be submerged so the original flange design with the raised cerated contact area wouldn't work as I needed it to seal around the bolts as well. So I faced off the flanges so they were flat and made these to go in the pool side, i'l need to shorten them to the required length once I get them on the liner.

Those are thing that make owning a lathe worthwhile, that little part that you just can't buy. How many times have you shown the family?

I made a small bung for an oil extractor last week, machined a groove for an oil seal and knurled the end, once I shown everyone twice they weren't interested anymore

Haha I tried showing the kids and but they just looked at like i'd lost the plot

The remodelling of the man cave to create more space is a bit more involved than I first thought so until I get dimensions sorted I cant put the proper plinth down for it so its on a temporary base at the moment, really enjoying it though.

Hell I only managed to cut those threads nicely because of the advice pete, Matt, brightspark addj and many others passed on to me when I asked the questions and double boost's vids on the lathe are the best for explaining the details by a clear light year.
If I can do it on a hobby Myford your easily in a position on that thing of beauty.

Here's one I made in 2013, my first piece of work on a lathe. (Just the end bit not the lever)
It's still trundling around on my mates Triumph Daytona 595.
My friends all thought it was magic but the missus was like yeah whatever....

The quality of the threads you turn will depend quite as much on the actual material you're turning. I turned some coarse threads in a moulded plastic and they came out beautiful when I was expecting trouble. I did a quick test on the Bantam for Barlidge on some random scrap and they cut well but the finish was not so pleasing.

Putting a fine thread in some large diameter machinable ally bar is a good way of practising AND getting a pleasing finish because you can combine slow feeds with low rpm with high sfm and your in-feeds are small.

We moved into an old cottage that had a huge cast iron bath but the original bath plug was missing and the replacement was too small and wrapped in silver foil to make it fit.
I tried in vain to find a new replacement, everything was just too small, so I said to the missus that I would make one. I disappeared out into the workshop and came back 15 minutes later with a freshly turned plug of black Delrin complete with a knob for the chain and it fitted perfectly.
The missus was amazed, I don't think she would have been more impressed with a 16th scale working model of a Merlin engine!

I bought some Delrin bar ends from ebay a couple of years a go, it's great for practice as it's free cutting but it's also amazingly capable stuff. I've it used it to make pieces for pressing suspension bushes out and under compression it's more than match for steel bushes. It was probably one of the best £25 I've ever spent, I've made so many things out of it.

If nothing else it brings some joy when things aren't going your way on the lathe as you can machine an absolutely perfect finish very easily and make some completely useless widget
