Its one of those things where either way its going to cost me a bit to get set up .. might aswell do it with something I actually want.

Can 1.5- 2k not get me a decent condition run around discovery ? If the insurance is correct it would end up within the same budget the smaller cars seem to be costing me.
Not including running costs of course but I can cover that as it comes.

I will try finding someone I know that actually has a clue on them if it does go that way ..

That sort of budget will certainly get you a decent Landrover, but pick and choose carefully, avoid noisy gearboxes and have a good crawl underneath with a torch to check the chassis and bodywork. Have a look through the service history too see when the cam belt is due as that takes a few hours to change, but as with most Landrover bits the parts are dirt cheap.Their a nice machine to work on and brilliant fun off road.

Plus a large difference in tyre costs.

Once I've found a decent one ill check the insurance again properly before deciding anything ...
incase the Adrian flux one was just an error.

It did seem strange to me that was low, maybe they were suppose to put another 0.

Actually not always correct about Jap cars, its often to do with who buys that model etc. Of course not all Jap cars are made in Japan and many that are have spare parts made within the EU to their spec.

owas.. this what i am writting is not to burst your bubble before you start but make you aware of the non fun side of driving,... a lot of sensible cars that have been mentioned you dont seem keen on for what ever reason, but before you spend or go into debt for a few k on a vehicle remember if you get 6 points on your licence you`ve lost it for two years, and you will have to resit the coarse + test again and still have the vehicle to pay for, and the insurance, flashed twice by a money box (camera) and thats 6, or kojak with the kodak 3 each time, tyres 3 each one, the list goes on, beware of cheap insurance quotes, the only intrest insurance company`s have is their own, so make sure the insurance fits YOUR needs and not what they want you to have, ie, if you use vehicle to travel to work, make sure it says that, if you take customers or go to see customers with your job/work or in relation to it you`ll need business insurance, (fact)
if you need a bit more space to carry something you can tow a small trailer weighing up to 750kg all in (trailer + whats in there) again make sure insurance covers,
one last point on insurance, what ever you need covering on your insurance make sure it says so on the policy, dont at any cost take for granted whats said on phone, remember the golden rule with insurance.. get it in writting

They did mess up the details from the online quote,
Had it down as kept in a garage and id had my licence for a couple years. I only put ive had my licence since the start of the year and park on a driveway.
Still only came to 1.5k with the correct details though ..

I like to think i'm a careful driver in terms off speed ect although I am only driving a yarris in my lessons.

Renault 5 sounds like the obvious solution. Unusual to see on the road, can be had for under £500 with tax and MOT. Can fit loads into them, and the later ones (post 1990) have 1.4L fuel injected engines so are reasonably quick. Not sure what insurance cost would be.

Oh definitely, my instructor said i'm pretty much ready to pass driving wise today (about 11 lessons so far iirc) .. just gotta get my parallel parking sorted and get round to doing the theory.

I'd heard the same. I asked the insurance company about it a year or two ago, and apparently the insurance stance is that with them being an import, parts are liable to cost more, hence the inflated price. Yet another crappy and nonsensical excuse they use for shafting us senseless.

went through this 3 months ago for my son... basically if it is not a corsa or cleo, 1200cc or less and 3 door they are going to charge you the wrong side of £2k... some over £3500.... best to just suck it up this year and save yourself £££ unless you have a real need or money to burn

Those cost me about the same as the landy to insure, my area doesn't help when it comes to those sort of cars ... There's regularly those car park things where all the little chavs gather and race down roads .. with a usual gathering point only a mile down from me ..

Whoever said a disco in this thread has now got me hooked on wanting to own one even if I have to pay a little extra to get up and running
