That would be an impressive brickie to set it out, build 9m long wall 10 courses high including piers and soldier course toppers in 8 hrs! Sounds like Saturday night out brickie claims!

Even if it took him to 2 days, £400 a day is too much money for a brickie even in London!

Where are the bricks. Have you supplied sand. Is the sand out front or near the wall
Is he supplying a mixer or are you
Does he have a labourer or is he self labouring.

So many factors that influence prices

its not my place to make a comment but a bit steep in my eyes but its down south

also it may have been overpriced as they didnt want the job in the first place

I can get a good bricky for 150 a day .if its for me 100

I call bull. Any brickie worth there salt isn't gonna be grafting for that

mix up some muck and get on with it, be very careful with the first few courses, then you will get the hang of it, you can just do a bucket of muck a day or whatever works for you, it only gets easier as you go up,

But doing it well isn't, a brickie could lay 6 courses to my 6 bricks and have a tea break in-between.

That's spot on grim_d, before I retired, I said to my landlord, an old fashioned time served bricklayer who had all the skills, flint work, rubbed and gauged, decorative bonds etc: "Look, tell you what, I'll teach you to weld", if you teach me to lay bricks. I'd done a lot of work for him, fencing, gates and the like, he'd always taken an interest in my blacksmithing and if the weather was poor, I'd be guaranteed company and a cuppa.

Anyway, he says: " No, absolutely not, I'm not doing that", I think oh sugar, I've upset him now, where is this going to end up?

I tentatively inquire why teaching me to lay bricks might be a problem.

He replies: "Well that would be all well and good but what would we do in the afternoon?"

I used to be pretty quick. Would take me the first day to get back in the swing of it

I used to earn a bit more than that as a hod and mixer in the late eighties, was north London tho and was appreciated for working hard, ah youth!
@dobbslc give it a crack mate, it's really rewarding - mixing isn't!

Indeed it is, I believe you'll hire these guys for less

If you want to cheat a bit make a simple frame for applying the mortar, goes super quick to lay an even layer.

here .the 1st and last piccy I did the brickwork and repointed the whole house there was a sandstone lintel above the patio door and a window to one side I bricked in .one doorway bricked up using old bricks the sandstone lintels that were above door and windows removed and bricked in and the middle wall was built by my mate 30 years ago the one that's not much good and don't work for 150 a day . theres not one brick out of line I can get top quality joiners 125 a day plasterers the same price and decorator paperhanger for 100. can get electricians to do full house test for a ton give them the jobs and I stick 60 on for myself no point in me doing it now so handed in the registration saves 400 quid a year as well

My latest bit of bricklaying: five courses high, 14ft total length.
You can tell the difference between the first row, and the last.
No piers. No soldiers.
Did a 1:4 mix in the big mixer ( a barrowfull) and just plodded on.
it took two mixes, and two days. (Had a few other bits + pieces, including about 20 breeze blocks)
Mixed size recycled bricks are a PITA, probably increased time by 25%
