First "beads" on new welder

So, finally, my new toy arrived. Straight out to the garage after work to play around. I found it easier than I thought to strike the arc. Technique needs alot of work, but I loved the whole process.

First EVER attempt at welding, 2.5mm rods around 70A on 6mm angle iron I had laying about

Not bad I'd suggest to increase the current up to 85A

That looks like a really good start. With practice you'll soon be producing smoother and more consistent beads, and then moving on to the various types of joints (butts, fillets etc.). As Memmeddu said, raise the amps more, particularly with that thickness of steel. Also check out the results of welding the more rusted area of your steel - there could be plenty of times you'll have to weld without being able to prepare the surface first.

Well things aren't looking good. Before I was finished the last day, I ran into the house leaving the welder plugged in. Came back out within 2 minutes and the whole place in darkness. Great, something has tripped. Turns out, the garage has tripped as had the house MCB that feeds the garage. Figured a fuse had gone as it didn't turn on after resetting. No spare fuses. Great. New fuse and still nothing so I'm guessing something has blown internally. No more than 10 minutes welding isn't ideal. Will be contacting the supplier tomorrow (Bob Richardson Tools) asking for a remedy

Thats so annoying I think...10 minutes is very poor indeed....at least you got to try out the process and confirmed that you really like the idea in principle.

I'm going through the same process myself...trying to learn stick welding (just for the fun of it).

I have a different welder (hyundai) but so far I'm also really liking the whole process and simplicity of sticking stuff together. There seems to be so much to learn I think compared to mig which I'm more used to.

I'm using 2.5mm 6013 at 85A...so far I'm making progress I think.

Yeah it's really sickening. I do accept that things are faulty so hopefully it's easy for them to recitfy. I was planning on making a log burner from steel wheels this weekend too. Oh well

I rang toolstoday (Bob Richards Tools) the woman on the phone said that she will contact Parweld and pass on my info and serial number and they will contact me as they are 'only sales'. No call from anyone. Emailed Parweld myself. If I don't get any response by tomorrow afternoon I'm going to look for a replacement and see what they say

Thanks guys, appreciate the help. I did half suspect that, I was trying to give them the benefit of the doubt. I'll give them another call tommorow and say I need a replacement sent out as I can't (read: don't want to) be without a working machine any longer.
