hi, I just got a new euromig150 from Paton and have had a go at mig. My first attempt the polarity was wrong but things are improving. I have been messing about with the settings and ended up between 18 and 19v and 4 to 4.5 for speed. The wire is 0.8 flux core. I’ve been watching a lot of tube videos and most of them talk about the different sounds and what it should sound like. I think that has been a big help. Any comments about the welds would be welcome. I know I need practice but if I know which welds are looking decent I can keep using the same settings thanks

11 12 and 13 a decent bead...whats the underside like, are you getting decent penetration with the heat, they look a tiny bit cold. what thickness is the plate?
its your first attempt and crap welds are to be expected. youll need alot more practice. buy a few 10lb spools and get to it. its not a quick or easy process learning to weld and getting a grasp of whats going on.
to put it in perspective ,most professional welds you see have likely taken years or ever decade of experience to ge to that point.
thats not to say you cant have reasobly good hobbyist grade welds in a shorter amount of time however but the more time you can put into practicing the better youll get
It’s 6mm plate and there is no marks/burning on the other side. I’m waiting on some 3 and 4mm plate off cuts coming this is all I have at the moment
well your off to a good start ,,,, get some 4 x 2 bits of 2mm or 3mm and start joining it together ,,, beads are good practice but it soon gets boring ,,, making things is way more fun , and never worry about burning through , its all part of learning what it feels and sounds like.
Thanks, I’m just trying to get something consistent just now and still playing with the settings. I never knew that flux core was so dirty, my mask is bogging and the tip keeps clogging up with spatter. I’ll need to keep my napper and the welding tip farther away I think.
I think I’ll get a wee fan and dust mask for now and see if that helps. My intention is to use gas eventually but I thought it would be easier to start with flux core and I’ll maybe need to use it out doors for welding bits of my chassis which needs repaired

good for welding outside, definitely.
i started with flux core and used it for a few years before moving to solid wire and co2 and it was worlds apart and to be honest, i found pushing the puddle with solid wire to be much easier than dragging with flux core, but to be fair, the last few beads are decent. keep at it, improvement only comes with practice but you arent far off for first welds
Managed to scrounge a bit of 2mm mild steel. Different ball game altogether . The last 3 welds are numbered,. Still 0.8 flux core last settings 13.5v 3.5 m/min. Been dragged away for shopping as we’re going on holiday tomorrow but hopefully get a bit more practice in before I go.

Hi Jodi, welcome, im with roofman, the welds in the first pic 11, 12 & 13 look OK.
Couple of things to check before you weld.
Preparation, on the second pic of the 2mm it looks like you have left the mill-scale on, this will allays affect your weld quality, its an oxide layer and will add porosity when it burns, and is more evident with flux core.
Use a flap disk or grinding disk to get to bare metal.
When learning to weld, try and get as much practice as possible and use the metal length wise, doing short runs is good ,but learning to put down a consistent bead over a long run will give you time to watch how the weld is behaving.

Thanks, I’ve got plenty of time to practice. My plan is to do my own welding repairs on my car but it’s outside and with the weather turning I’m in no rush to be working on it, besides the more rust I remove the worse things get.
