This plate is half inch thick and I will need to take multiple passes with the 2.5 millimeter rods. Vee ground on both sides to full depth.

That looks very decent I've had a few successful results with the Nickel rods on the rare occasion I've needed to fix something cast.
I think I got the last lot I had from ebay, just looked for nickel/cast iron welding rods or some such.

I used them long time ago (tig rods), the quality of the cast is very important. Some cast irons are like Swiss cheese.

I left the first test piece on the scrap pile last night. The flash rust highlights the weld clearly.
