guys,
got the chance of a fire extinguisher,
guy says i can only have one though,
all just tested,
but, i have the choice of water, co2 or foam,
what do you think would be the best for the garage,

Water

Water fire extinguishers are good for putting out flames on carpets and soft furnishings, but are dangerous when used on flammable liquids or cooking fats. This is a good device to have in the bedroom and living room, especially if you are a smoker, but not useful for the kitchen.
Foam

Foam extinguishers are effective on woods and flammable liquids, petrol and spirits but not for kitchen or electrical fires, making this a handy device to keep in the garage.

CO2

This is effective on flammable liquids and electrical fires, but not suitable for cooking fats or soft furnishings.

Dry powder

This can be used on the widest range of fires in the home. It is safe to use on textiles, wood, flammable liquids/gases and electrical fires. However it cannot be used on kitchen fires involving cooking fats and oils. It’s a good device for garages and living areas, but you will still need a separate device for the kitchen.

I stocked up on free Halon ones when they were banned, the local tip had a skip full of em.

I get to put my fire out, and annoy environmentalists in one go, its a win win !

I have a co2 by my aide when welding, never had to use it yet.

which ever you get, remove the safety tag, don't wanna be fumbling about when you need to be putting out a fire

Which is why we secured ours to their brackets with an easy break tie wrap, stopped the cleaners using them to prop fire doors open

I have a dry powder one in my workshop. I would have thought water would be the worst choice in a welding shop?

try not to use the powder . some jerk thought his 3 phase distribution board was on fire in a pub and squirted the bloody stuff everywhere . one breaker was stinking a bit . it did more damage than it saved . i have a couple of co2 dont bother with the small ones as they run out fast

we have powder in work but have areas marked off where powder extinguishers aren't to be used. mainly with the induction hardeners are

yea electrical appliances dont like dust or powder in the switches or relay contactors specialy when the machines cost thousands

Powder or foam I have one of each. Depends on what your biggest fire risk is.

I have a 2 kg dry powder. I chose it because it covers everything but metal fires (only a problem if your working with titanium or magnesium) and I kinda want to see the mess it makes. I think CO2 would be better and also, bigger is better because if my 2 kg doesn't put the fire out then it's 2 kg wasted.

Handy things to have .Someone was selling 5 on facebook for a tenner . I thought I'd have the lot , I think there out of date . 3 big red ones [water ] ,one was empty though ,a blue smaller one and a green one the same size . I heard the water ones can be re-filled as they have the air valve fitting on . Not sure about the filling though .

Thing is... what puts the fire out?..... I've used water extinguishers on a burning scaffboards over the firth of forth and to be honest you could p**s quicker .dry powder make a mess of everything ,halon kills you, C02 is the best used carefully. when I did my ADR ,we used them all and C02 came out the best all rounder, and a bucket of water for cloth, wood ,paper ....jeff

A bucket of damp sand is also well worth having.

Good for washing oil out of slipping clutches though!
