Fire extinguisher bottles

Anyone ever tried using one of the CO2 bottles from a fire extinguisher for shielding gas? It is possible to buy a 2KG extinguisher for £22 which seems like a jolly good buy as long as the bottles are OK to take a standard regulator from a welding set.

Sorry, after I posted this question I found that it has already been asked before. Seems like it is cheap option to go for, as long as you don't hate red coloured bottles.

Yes you can but with some fire extinguishers you may need to invert the cylinder due to it using a dip tube. This causes liquid co2 (if left upright) into the regulator and increases the freezing of the regulator eventually stopping the gas flow.
You can buy the regulators cheep enough.

Why bother? To rent a pub bottle forever costs around £20 and around £10 to get it filled. Regulators are only cheap off ebay.

but please please please only use proper bottles with proper markings on it

Empty CO2 cylinders are always coming up for sale, here, ebay etc., they go for next-to-nothing.
If you're not on friendly terms with a pub landlord there are companies who will exchange them quite readily.
Check my gas suppliers sticky for anyone near you.

There are places (see the suppliers list) that do bottles rent/deposit free. Just got 14Lb of co2 for £18 no deposit/rent from Whites Cellar supplies in Bristol
