Where do you get your good belts from?Ive a b&d powerfile ,,, must be nearly 35 years old now ,,, its the original one they made , only 350 watt or the likes , but its mighty , they do take a while to get the hang of , but they are mighty handy
Ive also a Dynabrade , its even better but its air hungry ,,, I use my b&d more ,,,,, good belts are the secret . cheap belts last about two spins ,, a good belt will last ages
I think Id like a Makita 18v one next , but the mains powered evolution one looks tempting at the money
i've had an evolution one for about 10 years. the variable speed controller burnt out so i cut it out, joined the wires so it runs at max speed only. works fine for what i use it for (running 40 grit belts, grinding welds) i've changed the end bearing about five times. it's just a standard bearing https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/174043064440I've got an Evolution one, it's good value and the adjustable arm comes in handy.
I read someone complaining that the nose bearings aren't available as spares, and I can't find them on their site. But I'm sure I'd have no trouble sourcing a suitable one and fitting it if needed
Pferd, Flex, Dynabrade would be my choice
local welding supply shop ,,, 3m and stainless tends to be my choice ,, the blue ones ,,, red e bay ones are just plain tragic.Where do you get your good belts from?
Where do you get your good belts from?
I have an old B&D one, it's brilliant on fibreglass. I've used it on steel a bit, but it keeps spitting belts off for some reason, breaking at the glued joint.Anyone got any views on if these are useful or not.
I have an air one somewhere but can't find it.
And I seem to remember it was pretty knaff.
Any advice welcomed..
You need decent belts!I have an old B&D one, it's brilliant on fibreglass. I've used it on steel a bit, but it keeps spitting belts off for some reason, breaking at the glued joint.

The Norton ones are very good. Never break and last well.
The B+D powerfile is so good I don't know why people would want to spend any more.
They feel really flimsy but are much better than I expected!
How are the belts measured. I have two air versions and they measure 6 and a quarter between rear roller and tip.You need decent belts!

Imagine the belt is a circle, the length is the circumference of the inside of the belt, width is whatever the rollers are.How are the belts measured. I have two air versions and they measure 6 and a quarter between rear roller and tip.
And the other one is 9 and a half.
But I don't know what width they need
I would like to get some from amazon as I need them for tomorrow if I can.
I've seen similar on belt sanders - if you run them in the wrong direction - effectively opening the seam they last seconds - but run the other way, they can be ok?Some of the belts are an overlapped glued joint....then they sand the overlap....end result is approx 3 seconds of grinding per belt!
The rubbish ones are like the wild west....you pull the trigger and bang they go flying across the room!but run the other way, they can be ok?
