Very useful. mine is within arms length in my workshop. Don't buy a black and decker or any of them with the side mounted motor, It just gets in the way. Mine is, and some may scoff, a Silverline one. The motor is inline so it's more streamlined.
I've 10mm and 20mm air ones, one Snap On the other Chicago Pnuematic. Both very good, the key is to buy decent belts and don't leave them in a damp workshop. With large grit every now and then you get one that gets chewed up immediately. Also if you want the best results don't try and run the belt till there is nothing left.

I used to use these a lot at work, we called them 'hand linishers'; I found them great. They were air operated but I expect electric is ok for DIY use if you're careful
Did you used to work at Tallent engineering? the press shop manager, Paul Kent, had a million parts in rework when he came down from there to destroy our press shop

I've the black and decker one. Very good for reducing my crap welding to a decent finish. The front wheel has worn, and the bearing needs a shot of oil every now and then but invaluable.
Its - blue - see top left, (Silverline....?
). It worked a treat though - no problems.I compiled this photo some time back for the Lotus Europa Forum, explaining how I refurbished the allow wheels and with what tools.

A new arm with front roller is only 12 quid from ebay. I replaced mine recently as it had worn the pin hole oval!

They can be very useful, and depending on the belt grade, can remove material quickly so you need to watch it.
Can't agree with that, never had an issue, even with a skateboard under me back under a Nissan Micra making the exhaust clamp disappear - had it donkeys years, still good.

I've had a Black & Decker one about 15 years and it does the job fine when needed.
