An update on this, some good, some bad.
The good bits, we hired a sonde, stuck it on the end of the rods and found the duct run, I run out of rods, went about 20m but it was good enough to get the digger in. The digger crew dug up the old drain and put a large plastic one in. Although the tree roots had caused a bit to collapse, the main blockage was a large plastic bag that had been washed down there. There's a big sump before and after this section of drain now, and it's running nice and freely, nothing coming down the road.
The bad, the same neighbour had a break in a few weeks back. They broke into his garden shed which had a cheap padlock on it, found a crowbar and used that to break into his house while he slept. They found quite a bit to steal so they took his Volvo keys, loaded up and off they went.
They took my detector, but left the gennie, I forgot to ask about the drain rods. I don't care too much, the main thing him and his wife are ok. They found his car a few weeks later, but by that time the insurance had coughed up and he had a new on on his drive.
I can now empty all the cheap top dressing chippings out of my drainage sumps, must be about 3 barrows full.
Cheers
Andy
