It'll be the same just replace the "The" in The Forestry Commision with a "Le" as in Le foresty commission.

I would go for Thuja Plicata Atrovirens, once established you will be trimming a foot a year out of the top of it. Double that if you let it go wild.

Pic doesnt show too well but looks like a.lot of old turkey tail on that dead beech. My opinion is its worth removing the dead and decaying ones to reduce spores and spread among healthy but stressed trees.
Be carefull climbing the decayed ones, if thats your plan?
Shredder looks useful but in practise 42mm sounds very limiting. I wonder if a log debarker attachment on a chainsaw could do the same job as a small shredder?
One day I plan to build a small and extremely compact/lightweight chipper/shredder. It will possibly involve a high revving 4t motorbike 125cc engine as they give upto 15hp , about the same as a 400cc garden 4t. The downside is it will be noisy, but a chipper is always noisey and not much of that noise is from the engine, so I think it'd balance out.

Yes 42mm is light for sure. But should do the trick to break up bare sticks as a replacement for tree bark.
Re the turkey tail or whatever it is, all of these trees are coming down to become firewood
All of them will be slain to make way for the laurel That particular trunk I may cut up and take to the tip anyway incase it spreads into the firewood pile.

Not sure if the output would make good mulch as it will mostly be white wood and not bark if you shred heavy branches.

It is quite powerful actually and naturally I wouldn't be feeding it really thick stuff. I will use branches around an inch in diameter and mulch them. Yes it will have some wood in it but a balance of bark too at that size, something like this
Will do rightly tor the first winter and if I don't like it I can always lift it later and put down gravel, slate or bark.
The cup holders are for your beers when tree climbing

I got a forest master petrol chipper last year for a similar job, once I'd removed the intake baffle restricting what I could chuck in and removed the outfeed shoot which tended to clog I found it quite a beast. Especially on freshly cut branches.
I've got some leylandi taller than my house to reduce the height sometime. Ideally I'd like to remove them but If I do everyone will see my workshop. It cant be seen with the trees which I like.

We had huge conifers in our garden when we moved in. Provided privacy from the properties opposite but you couldn't grow anything in the bed they were in. We put a fence in then eventually had them cut down but left the stumps. Lovely bed now full of poppies, foxgloves, a few shrubs. Conifers have their place but in your average domestic garden they're mostly a pain to manage and if I was moving house a conifer hedge/border would put me off, especially if it belonged to the neighbours.

Please dont top a conifer, its an awful thing to do to the tree. It will cause the top most branches to grow wide, all of the branches to grow extra wide and heavy. They cant grown new shoots like a broadleaf and will suffer greatly. The new top will dogleg and look awful.
What you can do is raise the skirt upto 1/3rd the height of tree as maximum. Or you can remove some alternate branches to thin it a bit. Its a complex subject so please look it up as I cant cover it all in a forum post.
Too many people jump up a 50 or 100 year old tree and start cutting without a care how it will respond.
You can do a lot of effective shredding with a chainsaw. Be very careful not to hit the ground or other objects. Build a pile of brush and chop it at about 100mm long intervals and repeat at 90 degrees. You will get 10x more in a bag, green bin or over a rail fence line
Last year, but no, there's no legal recourse I think. I'm going with the ignoring them and refusing to help fix anything or tell them their livestock have got out on the road or have anything to do with them option.

I have a shredder very very similar to this I used for small branch clean up. And its not that bad, just noisy. Anything which you can jam in the hole it can cope with. I wasn't expecting it to last the one job, but it did although the blades were a bit done at the end but you can get cheapie generic blades for them. We put the chippings round varous bits of the garden. To give you a idea of quantity I think we filled 10 big bags with chippings.
Anything bigger went into a few ibc's lined with big bags for use in the wood furnace as smaller sticks to get it going.The down side to this, is the round chippings round a few of the fruit tree's has now matured into the worlds best neighborhood cat litter tray. Which as I have 6 of them doesnt bother me so much, however, I also have 2 dogs, and they make a beeline to truffle out the output as cat poo is a amazing treat for a dog apparently.
