I hate to break it to you, but health and safety don't give a monkeys about small firms. I've never seen a H&S inspector in nearly 40 years of working.

We’ve been using induction heating for a number of years now for bolt stretching mainly (few other specialist jobs too) and it makes light work of what used to be a very time consuming job.
The time to heat up traditionally on the larger bolts (4”+ and 3 or 4’ long) could have been over an hour and used a very large element which glowed inserted I’m down the centre of the stud. You couldn’t use it in the air because it would burn out, it had to be surrounded by steel to transfer the heat into. compare that with the modern kit the same job can be done in a matter of minutes. You could literally change the time scale from minutes to seconds.
Now the price has come down it’s almost worth having a kit at home. If I could justify one I’d definitely buy a small set

Hmm, I've just had my domestic induction hob with a cracked glass replaced on insurance, I still have the old one which still works perfectly.

It will heat ferrous bits as intended, but is there any way to adapt one of the 'hotplates' to heat rods like in that vid?

He is indeed wearing spectacles, we've all been there, when I was a lad, your were a 'woman,' a lightweight if you wore safety glasses and hearing protection, or asked for extraction or a dust mask: REAL MEN don't need that is what the other lads told me, and I was naive, young and stupid, so followed their example,

Yes, I suppose we all have. I am paying a real price for a couple of previous re-incarnation indiscretions.

However, my comment was, I think, more of a distracted deflection of your YOU ARE GOING TO BURN IN HELL post. Personally I am just a little fed up of people jumping in and pointing out "Health and Safety". This is in no way directed at you as your post was quite genuinely what you felt. It is definitely me though, I was really ticked off recently when someone pointed out the bleeding obvious, again - me not you.
I just prefer to make my own decisions and there is one very qualified Health And Safety exec member on here and I don't see him jumping in every time there is a post and the poster isn't wearing full on PPE.

For the record, I stick my hands into spinning machinery every day and have done so for most of my life, starting about nine-ish. Still got most of my bits :-)

How much power to run it?

I think it's about 4000w 3 phs, but to be honest it's a bit underpowered for me, and we need a refrigerated chiller rather than the air cooled one we have. I was forging inch chisels yesterday and was only getting a dozen or so done before it was cutting out.

Make a large copper coil and connect it to the hob
