Final year mechanical engineering Project

Just finished our final year mechanical engineering project, myself, and 3 more lads from the area/course under took this. this included design, welding lots of stick welding, hours upon hours of toolmaking, blood sweat and tears but its here now, its rated to punch a 25mm hole in 12mm plate, but we have only went to 6mm plate as theres no man brave enough to pull the lever yet, and it puts out alleged 68.5 tonnes of force. Looking good. A urethane rubber* will stop the work piece sticking to the stamp die



*The ones used for vehicle suspension joint is a good source

Aids mechanical advantage I'd say.

Looks like a well made piece of kit.
I didn't have time to make something like that on my ND Ag Eng.
I just made a polythene laying machine.
Would've prefered your punch..

out of interst was it purely a design/engineering exercise to produce it or was it built to address a particular problem/need?

As i was wondering how much punching of steel you need to do in the middle of a field with a tractor ? I know nothing about farming/agricultural so its a genuine question of interest

correct mechanical advantage of 3:1 15mm from botttom of the stroke of the bottom link bar. hyd actuator can lift 22.5 tonnes vertical, this gives us 70 ish tonnes of punching power. in third year a machine build is 15 of 60 credits for year, this could be anything the group of students wish. The brain child behind this is no need to install 3 phase and still getting great power. 3 pt link was fitted to allow machine to be moved easily. can be used via a power pack but we were making use of the tractors internal hydraulics. punch and die comes from a standard kingsland iron worker and is fully changeable with no mods needed to tooling. punch and die housing unbolts in with 8 socket head cap screws, rollers are removable, this means other tooling can be fitted, so if we had time, we could generate tooling to bend pipe, shear bar, press bearings, crimp hydraulic hoses etc. table is fully adjustable via chain and with aid of the bottom link bar table can be adjusted using hydraulics and chains. linkage works on same principal as a gearbox, torque for speed, or speed for torque. which means by have the table adjustable, power and speed is a varient.1400euro for materials to make it. time was free as we done it as a college project
