Filtering water after compressor

Hi Guys,

I am thinking about starting some spraying work, but in the place I will be using to paint, there is a compressor but nothing to separate air from water.

Basically the hose is directly fix on the compressor, I know that on the compressor there is purge system to remove the water.

I am wondering if it will be enough, or if I really need a pipe system and a water filter.

I suppose I could get a filter and connect the hose to the filter and then connect another hose for painting.
But I am wondering if there is too much interest doing this.

And if I will gain anything?

You will gain a lot believe you me, you can pick them up quite reasonably off e-bay etc, have a look at Malcolm's tutorial on his air set up, the cleaner the air the better. less problems after.

And fit your filter close to where you're working, that way the air will have had some time to cool down in the pipe and water will condense out more easlily in the filter.

As Eil says, look at that tutorial and note how the pipes slope to allow condensate to be pushed along into the water traps.

I believe you guys.
My problem is more I am not sure if it will be possible to change the compressor setup I don't own the place.

So I am wondering if the worst come to the worst, and I can't change the compressor setup.

Would it still be possible to spray? I suppose i will need to cut the paint after?

Would it make my life easier if I connect the hose to direct on the filter, then another hose after for spraying.

I can buy a filter that no problem, my problem is more I don't think I can change the install.

Do you know what I mean?

Yes you could, try and use the biggest hose you can find to feed the filter.

I used to use a filter with male and female quick connects. I'd just install it in my hose. Was along hose to where I was working, the filter/trap then a short to the gun.

It worked well and caught a lot of water on my old compressor.

Where you having the filter/trap water fixed to the wall? or simply on the hose?

It really need to be fixed to the wall or maybe make a stand for it. It needs to be kept vertical (with the bowl at the bottom).

I had it sitting on an open box. Nothing fancy

I now have a better compressor and hard piping similar to malcolm's setup without all those traps in the lines. New compressor outputs very little water as it is bigger and has a large tank that cools the air before it exits the tank.

I could fill up my water trap in an hour using a die grinder with the old setup. Compressor was running continuously.

BTW, a water trap will make your air tools last much longer; not just for spraying. I got one after using the die grinder and then finding the next day itwas stuck as the vanes had rusted. It was dripping white goo when i was using it.
