When I retired I was determined to get some decent files, and I bought one example of every file Axminster sold. I then moved house, and it was a good 11 years later I discovered them all brand new in a box and never used. A friend (Joules) on another forum was bemoaning not having enough files so the old ones all got packed up and sent to him, and the new one brought into use, which is why all the handles look so clean in that picture !

I've done similar, heat the tip of each file to red and then use it to melt a suitable hole in the plastic.




Actually they are stored in a length of dexion that's had the holes turned into open slots on the gabro and been screwed to the wall.

I’ve got a MDF shelf, series of 20mm holes with a slot cut into each hole so I can slide the files in and out. My dad would turn in his grave if he caught me chucking them all in a drawer to rattle around. It really bugs me when I see drawers and boxes full of loose cutting tools. Even worse to watch someone rummage through them chipping all the edges. And breathe..

Mine are in a drawer under the workbench, all have either a cardboard tube or plastic pipe wrapped around them dependent on size to stop them rubbing together.

They all live in the Big Port Bottle Box, bar the three I actually use.



On the left is the big flat one, in the middle the small flat one with a round back, and to the right the round one. Who needs more than three files.

I must say I'm envious of awemawsons set up.

Best to keep files for brass away from steel. and you need a whole range of 'coarsenesses' to bring a surface to a good accurate finish rapidly.

Then for different applications you either do or don't need 'safe edges' so the file does or doesn't cut on two edges at a time.

My best Bahco 6 are hanging within reach of the vice on a nail board. Other older files are together in a drawer, needle files in a tool chest drawer. At work I have a cheap Draper Redline set including needle files in a pouch from Ebay close by the vice in a roll cab drawer. A couple of naughty old ones on the lathe and the same hangin on the welding bench tool board, those are the ones that get used for light deburring and checking is something is hardened.

Don’t put them all in one place. They’re like tape measures, you need them everywhere. Keep the good ones in a roll like Wallace.
