Not all they're cracked up to be.

I do not know what he tried, but less than 1 kW of laser source power - IMHO these are toys. The Germans did "cross-hatching" with a laser beam 10 years ago at a price of ~ 100K, and the Chinese made the first cleaning machines with horizontal scanning, which reduced the quality of cleaning. The technology of deflecting mirrors was then primitive in the Chinese version. But that was 5 years ago. Progress does not stand still.Ed China tried one out:

Hi Sergei, I think the problem he highlighted was that, in the example of large scale laser cleaning, you are better off in terms of both speed and cost, simply media blasting. Agreed, tou have no media to deal with after Laser cleaning, but it is still only line of sight and still today, very expensive and slow.I do not know what he tried, but less than 1 kW of laser source power - IMHO these are toys. less than 15K for a 1 kW welding machine with a wire feed option, already something. Yesterday it was unrealistically expensive. I remember offers for 50K, then the price went down to 30K. And today my local manufacturer offers a price of about 12K with a guarantee and service for the welding machine. The guys are engaged in Chinese solid state lasers and build large 2D cutters for metal from them and so on.Give it a year or so and the Chinese will be sending them over by the container full at £199.00 each
To clean car frames, hull from shells, need a different power of the radiation source, IMHO.Hi Sergei, I think the problem he highlighted was that, in the example of large scale laser cleaning, you are better off in terms of both speed and cost, simply media blasting. How much!! Group buy, anyone?
I noticed in the testimonials as part of the video, one said "In 41years of welding.....", but in the pic the chap looked to be no older than mid forties - are they born wielding a torch in 'Murica?

served his time with JB WELD
I have seen lots of these laser welding videos. Amazing process but only for very thin materials - price will go up massively if you want to do thick stuff.
A game changer for many processes though.
From memory, a 1.2 kW laser can weld 5 mm thick stainless steel. For fine details, looks like magic. Minimum heat input and, accordingly, warping of the metal after cooling. Wire feed expands the possibilities.I was thinking the same, paper thin panel repairs come to mind.

I really fancy one of these laser rust removers.
Is it a heating/cooling jacket? I've never seen anything like that. This is laser welded...flat sheet about 0.9mm(ish) welded to 3mm. Inflated after rolling etc, so pretty strong I'd say

The genuine ones are 1000W plus and cost a few grand!Buy one and report back...... F/book Marketplace is full of ads for them [note the low voltage...]
I've always regarded them as scam ads.

Just re read that - TOTAL scam - disgusting - I am guessing they think that people paying £23 will forget about it and not bother to claim back.Buy one and report back...... F/book Marketplace is full of ads for them [note the low voltage...]

Yes, exactly that.Is it a heating/cooling jacket? I've never seen anything like that.
With such a wall thickness, there should be good stiffness. I will remember this trick, thanks.Yes, exactly that.
I know nothing about this, however, welds with no reinforcement, no shielding of any description, it's all wrong, I would need to see an actual demonstrationThis Video came up on the homemadetool forum, while it does look super neat and sped up, there is something that doesn't look right to me about it apart from it being drag welded, can anybody shed any light on why it looks odd to me or is it just my imagination?
