hi guys

Looking to get a good set of files, been looking at the bahco 8inch ones for general use. I know they make them for snapon (less than a 1/5 of the price of the snapon ones if bought on fleabay) so was wondering if you guys had used them and had thoughts on how good or bad they are. Or are there other brands you would recommend.

I bought a Bahco set about 2 years ago, they only see occasional use, mainly on mild steel, they seem good quality, I am happy with them for the price.

I bought a box of files from chromwell tools about 5 years ago, still using them. Proper engineers files, no handles. Need to buy them separate!

Bahco files are excellent. I have three. Various cuts but all are excellent.

So they should be, they’ve been doing it for decades and are now owned by and produce the files for Snap-On.

Another very good make is Pferd.
I’m hoping to get a few if their milled, general engineers and aluminium specific files in the next month.

Go to engineers merchants and get what industry uses rather than just going by name.

We use them at work so that is part of my decision as well.

Pretty sure these are what mine are! Plus handles obviously. Quite painful stabbing yourself with a file tang by all accounts!

Whether it's right or wrong, a fitter showed me a trick for putting the wooden handles on. Start the file tang in the hole by banging it on the bench, then hold the handle and hit the wooden end with hammer, mallet etc. which draws the file up into the handle.

Or should I start a thread about fitting file handles?

Seen that method, but when they cool down and contract do they go loose over time?.

Doesn't the heat travel up into the file itself and affect the temper of the metal doing that ?

I'll stick to hammering them on cold, never had one work loose yet.
