Yep I test them once done in because I use old files for making turnscrews and knifes

Bought some files from homepage in an emergency ( forgot to pack any for a fit and homebase was a short walk) they don't cut too bad actually but those will be interesting to spark test when they are done in

I'm wondering how come you don't see carbide files? You can get all sorts of other carbide cutting tools and on the whole they are an advancement on what used to be available but hand files seem to be stuck in the last century. I know it's expensive and all but they would last a lot longer than your average file.

Files get wet abused and broken. Just dropped a frame on one this afternoon. Sales wouldn't hit break even I recon. This is why some are case hardened

You can find good quality files about, the hard thing is finding a good apprentice to use them

I suspect they wouldn't be too brittle for the careful user, but the chap who chucks them all in a draw after use, uses it as a prybar and hammers the odd thing would probably break them. As this seems to be how so many operate they might not be popular.

they do do files in carbide rotary the amount of carbide needed for a file would be cost prohibitive. I do have a file that is coated with carbide grit bonded on

There are sets of diamond coated needle files in Lidl this week. I bought a set a while back & they are surprisingly good.
