MOD Following on from

Please add any temporary field repairs you have done on vehicles, machinery &c to get going again.

I've moved those posts from here that don't specifically relate to MOD manuals.


Used to hang around an Auto Parts store when younger, before parts stores were big chain stores. An old timer came in and told the story of having a big end connecting rod bearing wear out about 800-900 miles from home, Arizona to Ohio in the USA. Did not have much money. Pulled the old bearing out and put a piece of leather belt in it's place. Got 30-40 miles out of it before needing replaced again. After several changes He figured out He needed a little clearance for the oil. Once sorted out He was able to get around 100 miles on a change. My how times have changed!

An other one is with a puncture is to fill the tyre with water as you drive it centrifuges out holding the tyre up coz of the weight it is thicker than air so doesnt escape as fast you can fill it with a hose just put the puncture at the top.
I have done the jubilee clip on the crank one, before,
Number 3 rod went on a rally on a V6 tranny we stopped then cut the rod off at the top under the little end with the burning torch,the hole in the block that the rod had punched through we repaired with body filla, pulled out the push rods and finished the rally.
Then loaded the car onto the trailer and came home from the Black Sea Bulgaria, about 2000miles
Everything was going fine, till we where climbing the Alps in Yugoslavia and number 4 let go ( had been damaged slightly by number three) Oh dear we said, So I stripped it again we had a spare rod and piston with us, this time the bore wasnt damaged so we fitted the rod and piston we where running again in 4hrs and drove back home.
We thought a V4 might have been a little bit too much over the Alps. With an, all up 6tons ish, of transit trailer spares and car
I still have the rod somewhere as a keep sake was going to mount it.

Never heard of Norms puncture repair with water, but when we were kids & got a flat on the bikes, we used to put some milk in the tyre. This turned to butter as you rode & blocked the hole. It got you home even with quite a large puncture, but it was a sod to repair after as the fat from the milk stopped the patch sticking. I was told it worked on car tyres just as well, but never tried it. Must have been the early version of that gloopy stuff that you get now.
