Got ya. Makes sense. So you're saving half the process to get a 'prototype'.

thats exactly it!!! wish i said exacty that in the beginning!
so is it possible do do it like i said in the origional post without damaging the original part?

i know that the size wont be exactly the same, but due to the nature of the end product, i dont think a 1 or 2mm difference will make a difference.

yep, just lay up on the outside of the steel panel to get your mould, so then you have a nice surface for your new panel, lay up on the inside of the new mould then pop your new panel out, i have done it before, just give the PVA time to dissolve on both the original panel to get the mould out. give water then a tweak here and there around the mould, it mite take a while but will come out if you dont want to damage the metal panel.
